Cognitive Distortion
15th-Nov-2006 11:14 pm
So I've learned to notice my cognitive distortions (see link in subject) and combat them. This has shortened the duration and reduced the severity of my depressive swings (not that a regular reader of my LJ would notice...). However, the same tools that allow me to shut down negative thought loops can also strengthen them when something negative happens. It's interesting because my initial response is somewhat neutral but I can feel myself trying to convince me that I should feel bad about it.

Wow, I need to go home rather than go on about this negativity shit.

Be well, all.

Thanks for the link. I do that too. The negativity crap. When if I can get myself to start counter-acting the negative patterns it is weird. Does it ever make you feel schizo or something? Sometimes I start arguing with myself negative-positive, in my head. Bizaro.

I'll be better able to read that link once I fix the &#(* punctuation.

(Much better.

Oh hey, I saw that list a year ago w/ my shrink at the time. The problem I had is that sometimes I don't see how they're not valid. She called it Emotional Reasoning when I said I was too tired to grade - well, I really was tired and drained, and knowing that it's a subjective thought did not lessen my tiredness. Should Statements and All-Or-Nothing Thinking are important so you can set goals for yourself. Without the goal of finishing grading a set of papers, I'd never get started. *sigh* But of course it's better to start and fail than not start at all. *shrug*

I think the "should" thinking that's being put down here is actually "should've" thinking.

I was thinking more like "have to, and if I don't I'm inferior" -type thinking. *shrug*
